Vampire Freaks talks to Angelspit’s Zoog Von Rock about latest projects and their unstoppable creative process.

Vampire Freaks: You have recently been tormented by the censors in your native Australia with those black and white stickers, what would you like to say to those censors?

ANGELSPIT: I’m going to fuck you in the throat, And dig up your mother and fuck her too.

VF: You promote creativity within your fans actively getting them to make their own Angelspit merch.  Have you ever had a moment of creativity yourself within the machines that you use to make that signature and wonderful sound of Angelspit, have you ever taken two or more machines and created a very special one that you have gone on to use when creating music?

ANGELSPIT: I let the old machines and creative process feed into the new machines – thus creating something new that inspired by something old.
I like using old synthesizers to make new music, and old graphic process to create new images.
Besides loving old modular synths and early 90s scampers, I also love photocopier machines and printing presses – these old thinking inspire new ways of creating art.
Computers have made the creation of art too easy. Old machinery means that you need to invent new process – which yields new art.

VF: As an artist you are not into making bucket loads of money, you seek more to inspire people.  In life in general how do you make ends meet and keep a roof over your head?

ANGELSPIT: Angelspit has supported me for 10 years, thanks to a little luck and A LOT of hard work.
It is important to constantly evolve and listen to what your fans want.
Never be afraid of change – it’s a very powerful creative friend that can drive you.

VF: Of all the conversations you have ever had which one has inspired you the most and what did the inspiration lead to?

ANGELSPIT: I always talk to supporters after every show. I spoke with my friend Lou after a show in Chicago in 2012. Our conversation about the state of America lead to the concept behind “The Product“.
Every conversation feeds Angelspit’s lyrics – I love involving people in the creative process. Listening people’s experience and perspective has made Angelspit grow into the demonic beast she is today.

VF: For those who are unaware, can you please tell us of all the cool stuff that have been happening between Angelspit and The Gothsicles?

ANGELSPIT: We’re doing a collaborative album called HARDCORE PONG. It’s great to work with Brian, he’s a brilliant lyricist and we are encouraging eachother to do something new – more than Angelspit, more than The Gothsicles – this is HARDCORE PONG!

VF: How did you awake the dormant god inside you and how do you control it?

ANGELSPIT: Stop listening to the negativity! Never let self doubt make decisions for you!Try everything. Do not give up….ever!

Work towards your desires and make them happen – it’s very hard work, but with persistence you will make awesomeness happen!

VF: Angelspit of today is very much different from the young Angelspit, what one thing has been a sad time within Angelspit and what has been your greatest stage of evolution?

ANGELSPIT: Our latest album “The Product” is an important step for Angelspit – with a new line-up and direction. I am inspired to re-discover the concepts that pushed Angelspit in the beginning.
Moving to Chicago has given me the opportunity to go back to brash fashion and driving beats. DIY fashion, dark art and synths covered in steel grindings…HELL YEAH!
The new material is more brutal and powerful. The beat is the new god – let us rejoice and praise his name!

VF: What was the whole idea behind the Horror Hawk?

ANGELSPIT: Horror Hawks are head pieces I designed to be easily installed and look AWESOME!
I put a lot of work into them – they are screen printed and embossed for extra BADASS!
They have become very popular – I have made many of them and often see them at shows.

VF: On your facebook page you post a lot of inspirational comments, has one of those comments effected anyone and if so how?

ANGELSPIT: People are often tell me that the inspirational posts are helpful.
I started doing them because I felt online content was becoming shallow. Many people, myself included, are dealing with depression and anxiety. I try and say something that will help and inspire people to keep making their art. I believe we are about to enter a renaissance for art and music.
This is a good time to be alive!

VF: Back in January you showed people armour that you had created, why did you decide to create armour?

ANGELSPIT: I build armor for a new Angelspit photoshoot. I love making art and have always wanted to be a sculptor – but instead I ended up sculpting air and making music.
I also built armor for Angelspit’s new live show – I wanted to do something completely different.
Images and art feed from the same creative stream as the music – I love an album concept that also uses other mediums, like fashion, typography and sculpture.

VF: In today’s society in many ways we become slaves, are you a slave to anything?

ANGELSPIT: I am a slave to my un-reachable definition of perfection.
I am one of those artist who is never happy with anything he does. I know it’s stupid, but I have learnt to turn this into a self regulated quality control.
Perfection is a illusive and addictive pursuit – artist beware!

VF: What is your favourite Angelspit lyric?

ANGELSPIT: “I need more corruption in my pointless life” from the song TRAINWREAK from our latest album “The Product“.
People think that they will appear to be more interesting if they are broken and complicated….which is so stupid. It’s not a good idea to trust your friendship with a flaky head case.
