Zoog talks about Angelspit’s new music video for NEW DEVIL

If you want to control the herd, slaughter the rogue cattle first.

INSPIRATION
…so I was watching Fox News in amazement, not only because people BELIEVE this, but they pass it on to others and let it inspire their vote.
It is interesting how “we” as a society are defined by “them”. If “we” invest more fear in “them”, “we” become stronger.
I also find the concept of “The Devil” to be endlessly fascinating. “Perfect sin” makes our small acts of vicious brutality look tiny…yet inspired.

The idea behind the song is that Human nature is far more vile than anything “The Devil” could ever do.
It was inspired by watching the US primaries – where candidates bully, humiliate and destroy the other candidates ON THEIR OWN TEAM. It’s the modern day equivalent to watching gladiators murder each other for the entertainment of a bored public.

I imagined the song to be a conversation between two political candidates who are both running for the office of Hell. The lyrics are the debates between the candidates. One candidate is “The Devil”, who is being slammed by the rival – a rich business owner, who continually Trumps Satan with examples of his supreme wickedness.
I was also inspired by Jonny Cash – I tried to imagine how he would write the lyrics and perform it.

MUSIC AND SOUND PRODUCTION
Musically, I wanted the bass and drums to be simple and pounding. The bass is Minimoog and Doepfer Dark Energy with extra beef from the Emulator IV and K2000. I fed a simple drum loop into the modular synth to make a wall of bleeps.
The Minimoog is heavily modulated – producing a wall of bleeps and squelches which follow the bass. The Doepfer Dark Energy is sitting under the Minimoog. The Doepfer Dark Energy has THE BEST sub and low end of anything I’ve worked with. The Emulator IV is from the mid90s, and is still has a monstrous sound. I used samples of two monolithic synths from the 80s called the Synclavier and PPG WAVE…these old synths still have their bite!
The drums on the track are provided by a Kurzweil K2000. These drum sounds are the original metal clangs I sampled for KRANKHAUS.
…so the track sounds like old school Angelspit, but it’s produced with a new electro hell vibe….it’s a brutal hybrid!

VIDEO CONCEPT
The concept of the video is based on an Angelspit comic I am working on with Creative Impulse – an award winning production company making some awesome transmedia content.
It’s inspired by the war against drugs and conspiracy that the CIA pushed heroin onto the Black community and free thinkers in the 60s.
If you want to control the herd, slaughter the rogue cattle first.
In the video, the drug is spread via contact with money, but unexpectedly it mutated in people’s stomachs and hatches an ancient demon.

New Devil was shot and directed by Keith Jenson and his production company, BRAINWOMB. I have worked with Keith on two other videos – he’s a blast to work with. He has the perfect mix of horror, creepy and humour.

I always love the chance to work with Angelspit. We’ve always been able to just chase whatever ideas come to mind down whatever rabbit hole they lead us until we get something we’re truly excited about. The New Devil video is no different. Inspired by revelations that the war on drugs was put in place to further oppress already marginalized people we came up with a dark and crazy idea. The video was shot in and around New York City with some great footage of Angelspit, shot by Angelspit, and sent out to us. The video is coming together wonderfully and I’m really excited to share it with people.”
– Keith Jenson, BRAINWOMB.

The video was shot with the help of Angelspit fans who sent in their video footage from all over the world. Its always fun making a video and it’s awesome to have so many people involved.
