ELEGY IBERICA Magazine (Portugal) interviews Angelspit
With Angelspit we have tried to create music which has a genuine punk edge, in the lyrics, the aggression and the instrumentation. Even though we are largely an electronic band we don't want to write clean music, and these influences have a grungy, dirty edge which we have adopted. We have more in common with Nirvana than Covenant in sound and in concept because we're trying to make aggressive, hell raising turbulent music which reflects our world.

"Your parents will hate Angelspit and your neighbours will hate you for playing us. We are the bastard child of metal and electropunk."
- Angelspit

We all know now what Angelspit sound and looks now, but how would you describe the band to a mainstream person?

Your parents will hate it and your neighbours will hate you for playing it. The bastard child of metal and electropunk.

How did you guys meet and decided to make music together?

We started making zines together in 2002. Destroyx ran a zine distro called Vox Populis. It ended up helping her run it – it grew into a monster. We started using the poems in our zines as lyrics, and the music was inspired by Skinny Puppy, Sonic Youth, Marylin Manson, The Prodigy etc..

I see you’re doing some concerts with Ayria and Ego Likeness, but if you could choose 1 band/project that you would love to do a concert with, who would it be?

Sonic Youth!!
It would be awesome to throw Angelspit at their audience and see how they react. Plus Sonic Youth are rerally inspiring people – they produce other bands, do art exhibitions and also make zines.

The appearance of the band is very unique and stylish, where do you get your ideas from? Or what inspires you?

Artists like J.P. Witkin, Orlan (French performance artist), Mathew Barney, David LaChappelle and Bill Henson.
Bent conversations and random ideas at 2am also play a huge part in it.

Zoog and DestroyX, where do the nicknames come from?

ZooG:
The “oog” part is from the Moog Synthesizer. It’s a classic sex toy used by synth geeks.
The “Z” part is from a form of synthesis called “Z-Plane Morphing”…which, at the time, was hot shit.

What would you love to achieve in the future? Any big goals?

Tour Europe more! PLAY THE USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gig more in Australia, play Japan, write an insanely fucked up album, make more videos!!...and play the USA some more.

I heard the first video is coming up. Can you tell us something about what we can expect and if there are any other plans coming up?

The video was shot on the same day as the photoshoot for Krankhaus. It was directed and produced by our brilliant friends Drew Bowie and Brad Wiley.
Many of the ideas and narratives from Krankhaus are explored in the video – plus a very creepy sub-plot that Drew and Brad developed.

"There’s a weird mix of macabre humour and genuine anger in our music. This reflects our feelings toward modern day society…it’s extremely concerning. It’s time for people to get motivated and become educated in the dessisions that effect our world AND VOTE."
- Angelspit

Tell me about your clothing designs, such as the custom ties, how has this been going?

Rather quietly at the moment as we’re focusing on Tshirts. We’ve just designed a really cool Tshirt to complement the Vena Cava video.
One thing it understand about Angelspit is that we are addicted to making stuff!! If we’re not dreaming up photo shoots, then we’re designing Tshirts, or making ties, or making zines.
Destroyx is an awesome designer and loves to apply her sick ideas to al sorts of mediums.
We are trying to communicate an idea, not just make images or songs. The music and visuals are all inspired by a theme.

I love the zines which went on to become your lyrics. Did the zines ever get printed, can you tell me about the making of the zines?

We are both working on zines at the moment. There are about 3 in the pipeline. They will all (hopefully!) be printed. If they don’t get printed, then the go on the web (check them out here).
The zines are really import because they help us develop new lyrical ideas – and there’s a lot of new ideas floating around with the new album in development.

The band itself represents a certain style of music, which of course is your own unique style, but how did you get into this style ourselves? I don’t mean just the music, but elements and what it relates to your personality.

I’ve been listening to industrial and electronic music my whole life. I started with Jean-Micheal Jarre, then Kraftwerk, then Severed Heads, then discovered Skinny Puppy. Then got into Sound Garden and Rage Against The Machine.
There’s a weird mix of macabre humour and genuine anger in the music. This reflects our feelings toward modern day society…it’s extremely concerning. It’s time for people to get motivated and become educated in the dessisions that effect our world AND VOTE.

So you’re working on a new cd, will it be the same style as the first or can we expect some new attributes to the new songs?

Actually, half the tracks are pushing the ideas we toyed with in our first EP “Nurse Grenade”. These tracks are very live and industrial punk sounding. Big guitars, simple slamming beats, raw destructive synths and chanting vocals. We are recording live drums and metallic percussion for these.
The other tracks are a result of us experimenting with completely different styles – like Noise Vs R’n’B, Cyberpunk Vs Country. It sounds like a weird mis-match, but the tracks THUMP LIKE HELL!

You have a lot of logos, designs and artwork on your website and the cd. Do you design it all yourselves?

The logos were designed by Destroyx and Roberto Massaglia from The Tenth Stage.

"Many bands are content with sticking to the horribly boring formula that is EBM. We would love to work with Noise artists, sound sculptures, R’n’B artists, Neo-Country artists.
A band that has blown us away is Japanese Cyberpunk band BAAL – they do some WICKED shit!"
- Angelspit

Are there any bands or projects you would like to work with in the future?

Any band that pushes the boundaries! Many bands are content with sticking to the horribly boring formula that is EBM. We would love to work with Noise artists, sound sculptures, R’n’B artists, Neo-Country artists.
A band that has blown us away is Japanese Cyberpunk band BAAL – they do some WICKED shit

I must say, I loved the clothing and make-up from the photoshoots. But how long did it take to get everyone ready for the pictures?

Everyne got there around 7am. The cameras started snapping around 4pm. There were 20 people on the set – of these we had 4 professional hair stylists, 2 professional make-up artists, one EXTREMELY sexy hearse and several wonderfully dedicated friends!
Helen White, the amazing photographer, gave us some brilliant advice for keeping everyone focused – you have to feed them well! So we were all stuffed with chocolate crackles!! (the BEST Australian food ever!!)

I’ve seen the secret pages on the Angelspit site, which is pretty interesting and seems to tell a story. Can you tell me about the secret site and why you decided to do it?

The secret site is the narrative behind Krankhaus. Each scene has a story. Each character has a story. There is a chain of events running through the photos. All of these ideas are explored in the video.
A group of people receive an invitation to join a secret society…

“You have accepted the offer to an "Entertaining evening of a macabre nature". You do not know anything about any of the other guest involved. You only know that the evening is your initiation into an elite secret society which celebrates splendor, mystery and the beautifully grotesque. This secret society is simply called Krankhaus.”

What is your artistic and musical background?

ZooG: I studied music at university. I also lectured in music technology at university. I have a degree in ROCK. I should get a PHD so people can call me Dr ROCK. Destroyx plays bass, flute, guitar, piano and makes a mean drum loop.
