Tankt's Dave Foreman chats
to Zoog for FIEND Magazine.
....it was never published.
q. the ep sleeve describes
you as a 'riot grrl with a vocoder and a cyberpunk with a distortion
pedal'... the live show demonstrates this and more... i found
myself wanting to know all about you...
Zoog: well
I'm an Aquarian who was born in the year of the Rat. I like quite
walks in the park and warm nights infront of the fire. My interests
include reading, roller blading and cannibalism but I still like
vanilla. In my spare time I like to work with the She-Psycho and
make music that will inspire people to insanity.
q. what's
the reaction to angelspit been like so far?
Really good.
But we were hoping for something more violent. The kiddies are
downloading it, Djs and radio are playing it, but the Christians
and conservatives aren't protesting against it, so I feel we need
to fuck it up a bit more
q. how
has living in Sydney influenced you musically?
Sydney is
full of beautiful caring people and a loving and nurturing work
environment. This overwhelming possessiveness can be seen in our
music. Our lives are holistic, healing and calm. Lyrics such as
"Which part of Fuck-Off don't you understand" and "Heathen
Pesticide" reflect this.
Everywhere I look is love. Example, 2 of our flatmates are talking:
Flat mate #1: "Oh my God! you'll never believe who is saw
in Spot Light yesterday?!"
Flat mate #2: "Who?"
Flat mate #1: "Macia Hines!!"
Both Flatmates in unison: "Oh My God!"
someone,
kill me now
q. i get
the impression that you two are not to be messed with! the 'nurse
grenade' ep is a real in-your-face blend of huge beats, machinegun
guitars, and catchy vocals... what are you trying to achieve with
your music? i mean, lyrically, for example, you take no prisoners...
The lyrics
were based on Religion, capitalism and cannibalism. We use offensive
ideas and phrases along side things that we believe in. They are
all glued together with the visual inspiration of H.R.Giger and
Jole Peter Whitkencen.
They end up angry, complex and sociopathically harmful.
q. you're
not adverse to the odd f-word... do 'obscene' words still carry
the same shock value of old?
Yes, FASHION
is a very offensive word. We use it heaps - but frankly, I couldn't
give a fuck.
q. the
male vocals remind me of that ace sydney hi-nrg industrial act
jekyll switch... what's the story?
They kicked
out the vocalist who you refer too because he's a highly strung
angst bucket.
q. that
was an explosive debut live performance! can you explain to those
not able to get to the newcastle show a bit about what you do
on stage?
It's kind
of like therapy. We just let it out and get lost in the music.
Destroy X uses a bit crushing distortion unit to screw up her
voice, and I use a vocoder. We try and focus on performance over
musicality. No-one has ever come up to us and said "hey,
I really like the way you moved from that Ab diminished 7th into
that D suspension" - they only say "you went off"
or "you suck". Music is just the vehicle for the attitude,
and the attitude is just the vehicle for the merch.
q. although
the ep is very brutal and relentless in its sound, the tracks
themselves are extremely catchy... you can pretty much sing-along
after two listens... to me you are writing 'real' pop songs...
is this a conscious approach?
Speaking as
an 'alternative', POP is the most offensive word out there - and
that's a good reason to use it.
q. what's
the track 'nurse grenade' about and why did you decide to name
the ep after it?
It's about
the medical theme thing - and we've got heaps of clothes that
are in that fetish line, so we decided to form a band so we could
wear our clothes.
I'm a product of a subculture that embraces Morrasy lyrics. Do
you honestly believe I am capable of any thing of substantial
meaning?
q. production-wise,
you guys are pushing the envelope... there is so much detail in
each song... is going to that much effort really important to
the whole angelspit ethos?
Graham "Von
Rock" Kent from Grand Fatal blessed us with his famous "Three
Layers of PHAT" guitar sound. He's THE MAN - we had to get
him drunk though. Any musician how plays for alcohol is truly
on our wavelength...plus he's got very cool tats so he looks like
he sounds good
.and he sounds like he looks good. So he has
achieved ROCK
or something.
We're also
nerds who like to twiddle knobs and strive for detail to the point
of insanity. Once we were finished, we gave it over to Julian
Higginson from Bleepin J. Squawkins (www.bleepin.com) to master
it. He also ROCKS!
q. you've
now done remixes for ikon, the crystalline effect, and anxiety
whispers... fun?
Very. Those
bands, and all the other bands involved in Crash Frequency (www.crashfrequency.com)
are AWESOME. It's easy to remix a song that is a gold nugget.
q. tell
me about the mix of 'Psychic Vampire' you did for ikon... was
it a bit daunting to give such a big name in the goth scene such
a radical industrial shake-up?
It was a real
honour to be approached by Ikon. They are so respected here and
internationally. We wanted to give them a remix that was truly
offensive. DestroyX decimated their bassline and worked it until
we had something that we were confident could make the sinners
dance.
q. you
are the only band i know who can make a vocoder sound tuff! what's
the secret?
Noise + distortion
+ chaos. Plugin synths are the enemy. They're clean. A real analogue
is going to spit out stuff you don't expect - they go out of tune
and die for no reason. FUCK FASHION is built on one of our old
synths dying. MEAT's main theme has another old synth completely
out of tune. When we play live I beat the keyboard and don't care
what notes come out, DestroyX crushes her voice to achieve the
lowest quality possible. Cleanliness is next to Godliness
but
Satan's gift is distortion
