ELEGY IBERICA Magazine (Portugal) interviews Angelspit
With Angelspit we have tried to create music which has a genuine punk edge, in the lyrics, the aggression and the instrumentation. Even though we are largely an electronic band we don't want to write clean music, and these influences have a grungy, dirty edge which we have adopted. We have more in common with Nirvana than Covenant in sound and in concept because we're trying to make aggressive, hell raising turbulent music which reflects our world.

ANGELSPIT Interview in DARK SPY MAGAZINE (Jan 07)
Interview by Denise Caesar.

Some months ago the Dark Spy Editors read the Name Angelspit on the playlist of the second Crash Frequency Compilation and found quite a liking in the music. As Old Europe is not so familiar with the dark australian elektro and industrial scene we would like to ask you to introduce yourself to our readers.

ZooG: Destroyx and myself are the only members of Angelspit. We both work on the concepts behind the music and imagery, she does the vox, production and visual design and I work on the vox, production and programming. She is largely the visual member of the band and I work mostly on the music.

Destroyx: Angelspit are based in Sydney Australia and formed in 2004. Crash Frequency has been going for about 2 and a half years and consists of bands from around Australia and New Zealand.

"Crash Frequency" is not just a compilation but a kind of philosophy. How can musicians be part of?

"One of the main ideas behind Krankhaus is that we are medicated by society, being told how to think, what to want, who we should be. Television is like a drug in many ways that medicates the masses."
- Angelspit

ZooG: Crash Frequency is a collective of dark elektro, industrial and gothic bands from Australia who share a passion of their music and want to promote in worldwide. All of the member bands contribute their knowledge and contacts to help other bands. There are a variety of bands from goth rock like IKON, EBM bands like Angeltheory, Industrial Rock like The Mercy Cage, dark pop like The Tenth Stage and trip hop like The Crystalline Effect… and that's only some of the bands. At the moment bands interested in joining need to be in Australia or New Zealand and need to be highly motivated and willing to help other bands. Member bands often remix each other and help other bands with gigs and touring.
Crash Frequency was started to help bands support each other within the Australian scene….and it's a HARD scene to break into because many clubs and DJs do not play Australian music - they only play European/American acts.

Destroyx: We encourage other bands to group together and make alliances with other bands in order to pool resources, contacts and knowledge - release a compilation CD or go on tour! We've spoken to many bands in Japan, Russia and Canada and they are interested in starting a collective in their countries. Many unsigned and signed bands could benefit from helping and learning from other bands.

"Krankhaus" is your second release after your debut "Nurse Grenade", what inspired the concept of "Krankhaus" and what are your major influences?

ZooG: Nurse Grenade was basically a demo which allowed us to experiment with our sound, and Krankhaus was our first serious release. Krankhaus took 18 months to write, and they were an extremely difficult 18 months personally. There were many unfortunate events and hardships that influenced the creation of the album, thus Krankhaus makes quite an emotive musical journey.

"The story of the 'Krankhaus' is about a secret society for people who indulge themselves to the extreme, pushing entertainment and vanity to terrifying heights, mixing cannibalism, recreational vivisections and drug use."
- Angelspit

Destroyx: There are many concepts and layers behind Krankhaus, one of the main ones being about taking beauty to a grotesque extreme. It's about crossing the boundaries of entertainment and torture and finding the element of beauty in horror. When the limits of humanity are tested

and we stand on the brink of insanity, what horrible things would we do in order to pleasure ourselves, to gain status and respect or to do what we are expected to do? The story of the 'Krankhaus' is about a secret society for people who indulge themselves to the extreme, pushing entertainment and vanity to terrifying heights, mixing cannibalism, recreational vivisections and drug use. We're asking the question, if people had the means to do whatever they want to do, how far would they go? 'Krankhaus' is a projection of modern day selfishness and consumerism, if we can buy our pleasure at any cost, would we do it even if we destroy the lives of others?
Such concepts linger through the imagery and music. We find that imagery is extremely important as it helps spawn the music. We're very visual people and this influences the lyrics and musical direction. In isolation the music and imagery are designed to be appreciated on their own and complement each other.

Our major musical influences are Sonic Youth, Skinny Puppy, Cobra Killer, Killing Joke, KMFDM and the Faint. We listen to more 80's and 90's music than goth industrial at the moment. Visually, our favourite artists are J.P. Witkin, Mathew Barney, David LaChapelle and Orlan (French performance artist).

"Krankhaus" obviously is a play of words. In german "Krankenhaus" means hospital. And after the EP, that already had a nurse in it's title, we are wondering about your affinity to hospitals. Could you give us a clue?

ZooG: Destroyx has a certified medical fetish. Both her parents are research scientists who work in Sydney's largest hospitals. She was bought up with test tubes, Petri dishes and syringes. Her family's freezer is full of sealed polystyrene boxes marked with 'biohazard' stickers…I'm not joking!!
I used to work for a very large hospital in Sydney. We're both big fans of pharmaceutical design. It's so sterile and clean, which is a stark contrast to the dirtiness of disease, which makes it perverse in a sense.

Destroyx: Medical experimentation is always affiliated with terror, as the violation of the body through surgery is a horrifying concept. We use the medical motif as a backdrop for many of our ideas in order to play on such dreaded connotations.
One of the main ideas behind Krankhaus is that we are medicated by society, being told how to think, what to want, who we should be. Television is like a drug in many ways that medicates the masses.

Your artwork is amazing. Is there a kind of hidden godfather sponsoring Angelspit?

"We're asking the question, if people had the means to do whatever they want to do, how far would they go?"
- Angelspit

Destroyx: I wish! We both came up with the art concept for the artwork, and the design and typography was executed by myself. We funded the photo shoot by making and selling collars and ties. The recording, mastering and pressing was funded by us making hair falls and doing plastic hair extensions. We worked really hard so that we had enough money to create something that had a professional finish.

Thanks for this interview! We would like to also add that our CD will be released by Dancing Ferret Discs in January throughout Europe in January 2007. A special edition will also be available which features a 2nd remix disc including artists such as Combichrist, The Tenth Stage, Angel Theory, Tankt, The Mercy Cage, The Crystalline Effect, Diverje, The Process Void, n0nplus, Ego Likeness, Stromkern, and more. The remixes are very diverse…from EBM to hard industrial to cyber punk to psytrance.
