Interview by Seremoth.
DESTROYX
Who is Destroyx?
I am a humble student currently living in Berlin
but originating from Sydney Australia.
I am part of a crazy out of control cyber punk band called Angelspit.
We are an audio visual group, so we not only make noise but also
produce some pretty intense visuals. I also used to run a hair business,
but I’ve pretty much retired from that, so I’m focusing
on design and music now. Underneath it all, I’m a geek who
likes to design and create ultimately.
Every kid has dreams of what they want
to become when they grow up, what were your dreams?
I always just wanted to be creative… I was
always the quiet shy girl who no one wanted to hang out with, so
I always just created to get away from all of that. I always knew
that I didn’t want a desk job, I haven’t really had
one of those yet and I plan to keep it that way. I never thought
I’d be doing what I am doing now that’s for sure. I
don’t think I’ve grown up either!
You have toured with “The Cruxshadows”
and “Ayria”, what is the funniest thing that happened?
A couple of extremely funny things happened, most
of which probably should be kept a secret but a funny thing that
kept happening to me was that I kept getting loose microphone leads.
I would be singing a song and then thrash about too much and pull
the lead out of the microphone (midway though singing). It happened
weirdly enough about 4 times over different nights. It probably
didn’t impress the audience but it definitely was funny for
me. I think I will take Jen from Ayria’s lead and get a wireless
microphone!
What is your favourite stage outfit?
This is a difficult question, because I have so
many… but my favourite has to be my all latex outfit, consisting
of my black latex girdle and skull hands corset as seen in this
photo.
I really love latex... it’s a bitch to perform
in because it doesn’t breathe well, but it looks great on
stage because of its super shiny texture.
Do you design your own clothes? And what
inspires you in it?
I design a lot of my own clothes, but I’m
not professionally trained so I’m afraid I don’t have
enough talent to create everything that I could imagine. So I work
with a very dear friend of mine who is a costume designer (http://www.quantum-flux.com)
who helps me realise my designs. In our most recent photo shoot
I decided to design every single piece of clothing to make it as
unique and memorable as possible. It was extremely hard work but
incredibly rewarding. At the moment I’m most interested in
hat making.
I’m inspired to design clothing because I’m
ultimately a visual person. I don’t like a lot of what I see
in stores, so I have to make what I want to wear. I like to express
myself through my clothing. Even the alternative scene has become
homogenised, so I feel that I have to strive very hard to create
new and distinctive looks to represent the music of Angelspit. I’m
inspired very much by history...and mainly films and the work of
other designers. My favourite designer at the moment is Mother of
London (http://www.motheroflondon.com/)
You seem to be very popular in the Fetish
scene, in what way do you feel connected in that scene?
I am most certainly connected to the fetish scene.
I am attracted to the powerfully visual nature of the
scene. Being a visual artist I could say that I have a visual fetish
which is definitely stimulated by fetish
photography and fashion design. I think there are many people pushing
the envelope in the scene and
creating some incredible work which inspires me. I have a fetish
for corsetry, stockings, heels and
boots… but I am not into BDSM as such.
You are studying German, why?
This is a tough question… as currently I’m
wondering why I bothered studying German because it is such a difficult
language. I am studying it because I needed to study a language
for one of my degrees, so I picked German because I thought it might
be useful (as it is definitely a main hub for industrial music).
Hopefully I will be better at speaking in a few months.
CombiChrist did a great remix for you,
how was it realised?
When we got signed it opened up a lot of opportunities
for us to meet new bands. Patrick from Dancing Ferret introduced
us to Andy and that was that!
If you were a nurse what kind of nurse
would you be?
A sonic nurse… just like in Sonic Youth’s
album Sonic Nurse (one of my favourite albums from one of my favourite
bands). If I couldn’t be that, I think a latex clad nurse
from hell would probably suit me. Have I mentioned yet that I have
a medical fetish?
You will play at the dutch summer darkness
festival, is it your first time in the Netherlands and what do you
expect from the concert?
I have never been to the Netherlands, so I have
no idea what to expect. However I am really looking forward to it.
We always put everything we have into every concert… so hopefully
this festival gig will go OFF! We have been in contact with the
Cybercase people for some time, as they have been so supportive
of our music, so it will also be great to meet them and give them
a show to remember!
What can we expect from an Angelspit concert?
A crazy out of control audio assault. It’s
heavy, it’s loud, it’s dirty and screwed up… bring
your earplugs
and expect to be pulverised.
What was the most embarrassing moment in
your life?
Every day of my life! Especially here in Germany
because my German is terrible… Other than that another embarrassing
moment was playing the hugest gig of our lives in Philadelphia (with
the Cruxshadows) while being completely sick with the flu. It was
the first night of the tour, which made it extremely nerve racking.
We had just got back from the hospital (because that was the only
way I could get a hold of the doctor) and I was feeling really terrible
and my voice was barely there. I managed to get through the gig,
and then just fell asleep backstage.
What do you think is the most overrated
virtue?
Genius.
Many people think that people who are successful are blessed with
this thing called ‘genius’. Sometimes they are, but
ultimately it’s a lot of hard work. It’s 99% inspiration
and 1% inspiration a lot of the time.
Any last words for the readers?
Support your local artists, bands and clubs…
without your support we can’t make the scene better.
Turn off the TV, stop bitching and start creating!
