ZooG's notes on the creation
of the track "Wolf"
This is possibly my favourite track.
It’s random and doesn’t really sound like anything
else on the album.
We started laying the vocals down in draft 13 – so Wolf
came together very quickly.
We wrote this after our first gig in
Newcastle
– we played with IKON and Tankt. All our friends were
there and it was completely ROCK. New Castle Goths totally
ROCK! Dave and Roby (Tankt) are an absolute BALL as are Chris
and the guys from IKON. Our friend Brendan (bassist for Lux
Voltaire) nearly broke his head from banging it too much.
Newcastle has a large metal bucket in
a park in the middle of town….it’s used for mining
iron so it’s HUGE – you can fit a car in it. James
(keyboardist in Lux Voltaire) informed us a truly remarkable
ritual that takes place in the bucket – a ritual that
everyone partook in several times during the night. (thanks
Kate and Jarod!) The ritual was a bizzar and secretive ceremony
that I won’t go into here, but since this mind opening
experience the term ‘Bucket’ was been written
into our collective minds and gives everyone who’s ‘in
the know’ a warm glow.
MUSIC
This was our first real experiment into FAT. We acquired some
new toys from Germany and was so impressed at the FAT that
comes from sliding an Oscillator over a wide pitch range (ie:
from high to low). Play it LOUD and you’ll FEEL it!
The main bass is OberMoog and Doepfer oscillators panned centre
with Prophet 5 added in the mix.
The drums are about 8 loops cut up and
distorted. Plus we build a drum kit from bits of metal and
looped it….after completely wrecking it. A stereo feed
of this was fed into the distortion section on the MIDDLE
FINGER OF GOD and modulated by the volume of the guitar (ie:
the louder the guitar played, the more distorted the loops
became) instant chaos!
The guitar is Graham Von Rock –
this is also harshly cut up to give the jiggered aggressive
unnatural sound we were after
VOCALS
DestroyX did this in one take. Which is usual for her –
she’ll lay it down and absolutely SLAM IT on the first
pass. Additional vocals from me were for the vocoder and screaming
lines in the background.
