THE MUSIC

This is the first track we decided to release from Krankhaus. The final version of this hit draft 30 – it just wasn’t working so we spend months on it.

Vena Cava was ‘born’ in January 2004 – it was meant to be a driving insane hi energy track with a central accending manic guitar line. Graham laid the guitars down when he was doing the guitars for Nurse Grenade. We wanted to make something that would make party-people ‘come on’, and then die violently....i fucking hate 'party people'.

But this idea was completely lame arse and the entire track was abandoned until January 2005. I’d just got the analogue sequencer and Alienator and was looking for a track to debautch. DestroyX was at the Vivian Westwood Art Gallery in Canberra and I was stuck at the RockHaus hot and bored – it was about 35degrees that day….so I got drunk. Really really really drunk. The cool thing about being drunk and making music is you do stuff that you normally wouldn’t do.

The Vena Cava Cocktail:
2 shots of Vodka
1 shot calua
1 shot frangellico
1 shot butterscotch snaps

... this lubricated the song nicely.
I used Vena Cava as a canvas and got this percussive line happening on the analogue sequencer. I accidentally plugged the percussion CV into the Filter and BEHOLD…the verse bass line in Vena Cava was born.
The bass line is pretty huge. It has active frequencies around 20Hz (DAMN low) so it had to be worked a lot for it to make sense….there’s HUGE and then there’s ridiculous….this was ridiculous.
The bass was made up of OberMoog, Doepfer, Analogue Solutions oscillators making a HUGE mono bass which was panned centre. This was then distorted and fed into the Low Pass Filter on the OberMoog.

Rode NT1A, wooden pole, metal pole-o-dooom

The Prophet5 was laid down twice – each take was slightly different. The 2 takes were panned left and right. The Prophet 5 is PURE SEX. Turning up the Frequency Modulation and hitting the UNISON button makes demons howl.
…and around about this time I was unconscious.

PERCUSSION
An iron board was seriously damaged during the making of this recording. It was bashed TO DEATH with a large metal pipe, distorted and compressed to make the snare and the hats. The additional ‘bleepy’ percussion from the analogue sequencer is being fed through the Alienator (bit-crusher).

GUITAR
Graeme is a complete GOD. The guitar track is uneffected and unprocessed.
Yes, he too was drunk. Want your guitarist to ROCK? Pay them in beer.
